Look at your client and hold their gaze at the same time.

Standard webcams sit on top of your monitor. Your client's face is in the middle of the screen. So every time you look at them, the camera catches you looking away, and they never quite feel seen.

Why this matters

The research behind eye-level.

Whether your gaze reads as direct comes down to geometry. Below 5–7°, clients see eye contact. Above it, they see you looking somewhere else. Clients can learn to compensate for a bad angle (Grondin 2022), but why make them?
